red bull ford leads ADUO benchmark, rivals push back.

at monaco, teams learned who topped F1's first ADUO measurement period — and Red Bull Ford Powertrains came out on top, triggering an immediate review request from the team itself.

what ADUO actually is

ADUO — Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities — is the FIA's catch-up mechanism for 2026 power units. the idea is straightforward: the further a manufacturer's ICE trails the benchmark, the more development tokens they're permitted to spend closing the gap.

the benchmark result

Red Bull Ford Powertrains was declared the reference point after the first measurement window closed. that matters because every other manufacturer's allocation of extra development work is now calculated relative to that baseline — if you trail by more, you get more room to develop.

Mercedes' ICE is reported to sit 2–4% behind the benchmark on power output. at F1 power levels, a 2–4% gap in combustion engine performance can translate directly into tenths per lap on power-sensitive circuits — think monza, baku, or the long straights at silverstone.

why Red Bull asked for a review

Red Bull themselves requested the FIA review their own benchmark status — not to dispute the outcome in their favour, but almost certainly to stress-test the methodology. if the measurement process has any margin of error, a team sitting at the top wants confirmation the number is real before competitors build development programmes around it.

what this means for 2026

the ADUO result shapes who can do what between now and the 2026 regulation deadline. manufacturers furthest from the benchmark unlock the most additional ICE development — so Mercedes, if confirmed at 2–4% back, gains meaningful extra runway. Red Bull Ford, as the declared leader, operates under the tightest restrictions.

this is the mechanism doing exactly what it was designed to do: redistribute development capacity toward the back of the engine order before the new formula even starts.
